Daycare

Daycare waiting lists are insane right now.

A few stats:

Childcare availability in Sedgwick County is only meeting 41% of the potential demand.
Up to 16,541 kids could be waiting on a slot to open up.
The average cost per month for full-time child care for infants and toddlers = $1185

Child Start Inc and the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas are working to build relationships between employers in town and child-care providers.

Riverfront

Here is a timeline of events for some of the land around the Riverfront:

4 Acres were sold for $1 each to the New Orleans Baby Cakes to lure our new baseball team here
The City of Wichita is now buying back 2 of those acres (at $1 a piece)
The City will then resell them for $1 a piece to EPC Real Estate Group (out of Overland Park)

There are plenty of details, but I want to highlight that the 155-room hotel named “Unscripted Hotels” piece will likely still be developed.

It will be 7-8 stories, including a signature restaurant, coffee bar, and rooftop lounge with cocktails.

I think we can all agree on a plan which includes rooftop cocktails, particularly overlooking the river downtown.

Economic Impact

When it comes to economic impact, you absolutely can. WSU and WSU Tech are major 🔑 drivers of economic growth in our community to the tune of $1.3 BILLION in 2021.

Scooter Graveyard

Electric scooters made their debut in July 2019.

Pretty soon after, people started throwing them into the river. To those people:

Tuesday afternoon, more than 20 electric scooters were fished from the depths of our river. They recently became visible due to low water levels.

Closing Time

All good things come to an end, including city pools in the summer.

McAfee & Orchard close this Sunday (8/13). All other city pools are open on weekends and during special hours.

Aley, College Hill, and Minisa pools:

Open Sat & Sun 1pm - 6pm

Harvest pool:

Open Sundays from 1pm - 6pm

All four of these pools close for the season on Sunday 9/3.

Dog Days of Summer will be on 9/4 at College Hill.
